The Corinthian Riviera: Loutraki Greece

West of Athens is the Corinthian Gulf; a huge body of water that has seen warships and merchants ply it’s waters for centuries. The gulf is simply beautiful with plenty to offer from it’s beaches to the mountains and verdant forests. Ringed by small to mid-size villages and cities, and known as the Corinthian Riviera, this is the Greece that’s missed by most visitors. You owe it to yourself to do some exploring. I would recommend a rental car so you can do the entire Gulf. It’s about a 1 hour drive from Athens to Loutraki our starting point. I’ve made a list of my favorite places to visit for off-the -beaten-path discoveries. Keep in mind this is an overview, as I only had at most 24 hours at each municipality. So no spoiler alerts here, you get to dig [...]

Alonissos Isle Greece Is Green In More Ways Than One

Located in the Northern Sporades, the Greek island of Alonissos is vying for the "Greenest Island" title in the country. Although Greece and the EU already have plans to phase out wasteful plastic bags, the people here have embraced the idea, so on December 1st 2015 the ban went into effect. Alonnisos Mayor Petros Vafinis speaking to the press said “People here have had environmental concerns for a number of years, regardless of laws and prohibitions." Alonissos is located in an area known as the National Marine Park of the Northern Sporades. This marine park dedicated to protecting wildlife is also part of the European Union’s Natura program. Another concern is the protection of the native Monk Seal endangered and found only here. Alonissos Harbor The recycling program began to really pick up momentum in 2012, and as Mayor Vafinis explains “When [...]

Why You Should Visit Ios Greece

Pavezzo Guest House Located in the southern Cyclades, Pavezzo Guest House on the Isle of Ios is a comfortable and clean hideaway overlooking the beautiful Greek ocean. It looks like a white washed jewel box with a large covered outdoor seating area, green grass and a peaceful atmosphere. Our studio had accommodations for 4 adults, yet there were only the two of us. Amenities include, an efficiency kitchen, refrigerator and a coffee maker. The bathroom was really nice, fully tiled and everything looked spanking new and super clean. Our host Angela who is also the owner offered us coffee upon arrival and we just sat and took in the gorgeous ocean view. Pavezzo has 4 studios, and three double rooms, so you don't have to worry about too much noise or foot traffic photo gallery. A very short [...]

Iconic Santorini’s Chef Konstantinos Avgoulis’ Tomato Keftedes

Iconic Santorini's Chef Avgoulis' pillows of delight are called Tomato Keftedes. I  have a new favorite snack that I have also enjoyed as an entrée. I found this incredible small tomato on Santorini. In fact it is referred to in various parts of Greece as the Santorini tomato. Of course it only grows here developing  its tart, rich  deep flavor from the relentless sun, wind and lack of water.  My dear friends at Iconic Santorini Hotel suggested I try their Executive Chef Konstantinos Avgoulis'  version. Born and raised on Santorini, Chef  Avgoulis treats Iconic  guests to many of his treasured family recipes including his rose jam and this one using the noblest of ancient fruits, the tomato.  Of course there is nothing to compare with tasting these for the first time sitting  at the edge of the caldera outdoors in Iconic's shady pergola covered restaurant  [...]
