Three Restaurant & Bar of San Mateo California was a true joy to visit on our tour of this very diverse county. Chef owner Alicia Petrakis takes her food seriously so you can just sit back and enjoy a varied and delicious menu. All of the food we enjoyed was outstanding, creative and most of all, unique to this establishment. To say the menu is versatile is an understatement, fresh seafood, poultry, beef, pork and the veggies are all “spot on”. It’s no secret that I love bacon, especially pork belly, and one of my favorite dishes was the Bacon Bitz dish, a pork belly glazed with a maple chipotle glaze. The sweet of the maple along with the heat of the chipotle was just outstanding, not too hot or sweet. For me this had the perfect balance and I had a hard time sharing it.
You can tell that Chef Alicia and the talented kitchen staff take the time to ensure that any dish that comes out is perfect. House made Gnocchi with bleu cheese sauce and skirt steak was another winner. The fresh Dungeness crab cakes, pan seared Tombo tuna were all tender and well seasoned without overpowering their delicate flavors.
A don’t miss are the Wild Mushroom Stogies, wrapped in a delicate Phyllo crust the filling has that lovely savory touch and the dipping sauce is the perfect accompaniment.
The “from scratch” philosophy of Three really comes through, and they have the awards to prove it. It takes a lot of work to source local ingredients, make everything in house and be consistent. Three does this in spades. Just be sure to leave room for dessert, because pastry chef Leslie Cardiasmenos is a true talent and her skills really shine in what I call some “old school” style sweets- have a look at the picture of what she served us, it is better than it looks ! There are a lot of choices in San Mateo, and I highly recommend Three Restaurant & Bar to you. Make the time to enjoy some very high quality dining at Three Restaurant and Bar.
